Learning from Grenfell

The Grenfell Tower fire and the subsequent (ongoing) public inquiry forced a major reassessment of how we design, monitor and deliver housing in the UK, and in particular, how we should approach the question of fire safety.

In response to this, The Architects’ Journal and AJ Specification launched the Fire Safety Design conference, where we united a community of over 1000 people in 2021 and 2022 to examine the lessons learned from the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, focusing on the implications for design, specification, and management within architectural practices.

The 2023 edition delved deeper into the ongoing developments surrounding the inquiry, which has been instrumental in reshaping regulations and standards within the profession. The conference explored the nature, scope, and progress of the inquiry thus far, speaking to practices about their lived experience of adapting to the changing standards and shedding light on the significant reforms that lie ahead.

As the architectural community continues to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing fire safety standards, it is crucial for us to come together, share knowledge, and collaborate to shape a safer and more resilient built environment.

New in 2023!

Paul Morrell OBE, a respected industry figure, will be joining us as a featured speaker. Don’t miss his comprehensive presentation as he delves into the intricacies of the recently published report “Testing for a Safer Future” following an independent review of the construction products testing regime, commissioned by DLUHC, which Paul led.

The report reviews the whole system of construction product regulation, and how it might be both simplified and strengthened to restore confidence in the claims made for construction products and the critical part they must play in making buildings safe.

Paul Morrell BSc, FRICS, FICE, HonFRIBA, HonFAPM, HonFCABE

Paul Morrell is a chartered quantity surveyor and was formerly senior partner of Davis Langdon (now part of Aecom), where he had worked since graduating until retiring in 2007.

He was subsequently appointed as the Government's first Chief Construction Adviser with a brief to champion a more coordinated approach to affordable, sustainable construction, serving from 2009 to 2012. In that role he launched the Government Construction Strategy, including the BIM mandate.

He was awarded an OBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list for services to architecture and the built environment.

He now practises as an independent consultant, principally concerned with the organisation and governance of major projects, and with wider cross-industry issues.
